He walks her home and she invites him upstairs to her room but Vince refuses and stays the night at his mothers house. Both Jennifer and Vince are put to the test a few times throughout the film, such as when Vince goes to Gambler's Anonymous and meets a beautiful young woman. In the beginning it's just a simple lie they tell their family and friends, but as time goes on, and Vince begins to grow on both her and her family, the lie becomes increasingly harder to sustain. A week later they meet for lunch and stage a fake romance and engagement. They both are in awe on how much cash and gifts a bride and groom get, and begin thinking about how easy it would be to get their lives back on track with that kind of income. Vince (Joey Lawrence) is a ladies man and a gambler, who is down on his luck and owes a large debt to a man named The Monkey (Steve Schirripa.) As fate would have it, they are seated next to each other when they attend a wedding. ![]() Shortly thereafter, all of her belongings are stolen. Melissa Joan Hart plays Jennifer Verti, a young woman with no interest in love, who has just bought her first house and spent all her savings on the down payment. Will they end up finding up what they really want? - Huggo They must decide just what they are prepared to do to get the money and gifts. As they go through the process trying to convince family and friends that they are in love while truly detesting each other, then that they are planning a wedding that really won't happen, the situation gets more and more complicated. Learning that they must actually go through with the wedding to keep the money and gifts, they decide to fake-plan a wedding and then tell their friends that they eloped at the last minute, while not actually getting married. They're both in financial trouble-Vince's is a bit more illegal and potentially violent-and could benefit from being showered with gifts (which Jennifer could keep to replace her recently-stolen stuff) and money (which Vince could hand over to his bookie to clear his gambling debt) in the form of the expected wedding presents. Sparks of friction immediately fly between them, but Jennifer answers an off-the-cuff comment by Vince by proposing that they get fake-married, although she had said she doesn't really believe in the institution of marriage and all the pomp and ceremony of most weddings. Jennifer and Vince meet when they're seated next to each other at the wedding of their respective friends, Courtney and Steve.
